AI calling agent vs human SDR: the cost per booked meeting in India in 2026
Short answer: one in-house SDR in Gurgaon costs about ₹1.05 lakh a month in salary and benefits, roughly ₹1.5 lakh with a dialer, data and a share of a manager added on labelled assumptions. An AI calling agent from Digital Patron costs $599 to $6,000+ as a one-time build, billed in USD, plus platform usage that the providers publish at $0.06 to $0.31 a minute (Bolna, Retell and Vapi, 14 October 2026). Using Belkins' published benchmark of roughly one meeting per 370 cold dials for both, a human SDR making 60 dials a day lands at about ₹44,000 ($520) per booked meeting and an AI agent making 3,700 consented calls a month at about $32 to $122. The AI number depends on having a list you are allowed to call; for true cold calling in India the human wins by default, because we do not build cold robocalls.
Disclosure: Digital Patron builds the AI voice agents compared here, from offices in Gurugram and Mohali, and employs no human SDRs or callers. Facts were checked on 14 October 2026; every external figure is quoted from the vendor's own pricing page or a named, dated study listed under Sources, and our assumptions are labelled. We publish no connect, booking or accuracy rate for our own agents, so none appears here. For the email and LinkedIn version of this question, read AI SDR vs hiring an SDR in India.
What a human SDR costs per month
The salary row is sourced; the three rows below it are our assumptions, written as such so you can replace them with your own numbers.
| Cost line (per SDR, per month) | Amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Salary plus benefits, Gurgaon | ₹1,05,000 | ₹8.5 lakh a year plus 25% benefits, the figure on our outsourced SDR page. Cross-check: PayScale India's average SDR base is ₹7,30,080 a year (updated 28 May 2026) |
| Dialer seat (assumption) | ₹8,500 | Assumption: about $100 a month for a power dialer seat with call recording |
| Phone data (assumption) | ₹12,750 | Assumption: about $150 a month for verified direct and mobile numbers; the comparison post cites Apollo's Basic plan at $49 a user a month, and mobile numbers cost credits on top |
| Manager time (assumption) | ₹25,000 | Assumption: a quarter of a ₹12 lakh a year team lead's time spent on call coaching and listening |
| Fully loaded (assumption-based) | ≈ ₹1,51,000 | About $1,780 a month at an assumed ₹85 per US dollar (assumption; use the live rate). Ramp, recruiter fees and backfill excluded |
For a US hire, PayScale reports an average SDR base salary of $51,677 a year, or about $4,300 a month, with total pay of $45k to $82k (updated 29 May 2026), before payroll taxes, benefits, a manager, data and a dialer.
What an AI calling agent costs per month
Two parts: a one-time build fee and metered usage. Digital Patron's AI voice agent build fees are published: Starter from $599 (one agent, one language, one flow, transfer to a human), Business quoted between the tiers (multi-flow, CRM and calendar integration, Hindi and English) and Enterprise from $6,000+ (multiple agents, custom integrations, compliance workflows). Fees are one-time and in USD; Indian clients are invoiced in INR with GST. Usage (minutes, numbers, speech and model tokens) is billed by the providers, not by us. Here is what three providers we build on published on 14 October 2026:
| Provider | Published per-minute pricing | What is and is not included |
|---|---|---|
| Vapi | $0.05 a minute platform hosting on the pre-paid plan, with model, transcriber and voice costs passed through "at cost": Deepgram $0.0095–$0.0099, OpenAI $0.0077–$0.0452, ElevenLabs $0.0146–$0.0238 a minute. Telephony via Twilio $0.014 outbound and $0.008 inbound, Telnyx $0.0055. The page's own calculator shows $82–$129 a month for 1,000 minutes | Roughly $0.08–$0.13 a minute all-in at the calculator's defaults. $5 free credits; extra concurrency $10 a line a month; Pro plan has a $999 a month minimum |
| Retell AI | Headline "$0.07–$0.31 / min". Voice infrastructure $0.055 a minute, LLM from $0.0016 (GPT 5 nano) to $0.38 (GPT Realtime 2.1) a minute, telephony $0.015 a minute on US Twilio numbers. The page's estimator default totals $0.11 a minute (LLM $0.04 + voice $0.055 + TTS $0.015) | Phone numbers $2 a month; $10 free credits; 20 free concurrent calls; no charge for SIP trunking or custom telephony |
| Bolna | $0.06 a minute (₹5.52) pay-as-you-go, falling to about 4.5¢ (₹4.15) on larger top-ups. The FAQ describes a pilot of $500 for 12,000 minutes (about 4.2¢ a minute), billed in 30-second pulses, up to 25 concurrent calls | Telephony and a platform fee are "added per minute" but the amounts are not published; $5 free credits; Enterprise is custom |
Bolna's $0.06 excludes telephony, which it does not price; Retell's $0.11 default and Vapi's $0.08–$0.13 include it. A sensible planning range on a mid-priced model is $0.06 to $0.15 a minute; Retell's $0.31 applies only to its most expensive realtime model. We publish no per-minute figure of our own; we itemise the usage lines on the scoping call.
The dial funnel: the only benchmark we use
We have no published connect or booking rates for our own agents, and no vendor above publishes one either. The only sourced funnel we found that goes from dial to meeting is Belkins' benchmark study, published 26 June 2026 from 175,000+ dials logged through 2025 by human callers:
- Per-dial connect rate: 9.9% (24.5% per prospect across repeat attempts)
- Connects that became a conversation: 58%
- Conversations that booked a meeting: 4.6%
- End to end: roughly one meeting per 370 dials
Those are human cold-calling numbers. Applying them to an AI agent is an assumption: an agent cannot read a room the way Belkins' callers can, but the lists it is legally allowed to call (form fills, demo requests, existing customers) are warmer than a cold list. We have no evidence either way, so the example uses the same funnel for both; replace it with your own.
Cost per booked meeting: the worked example
Assumptions, stated once: ₹85 per US dollar; Belkins' funnel for both; a human SDR makes 60 dials a day on 21 working days (assumption: 1,260 a month); the AI agent calls a consented list 3,700 times a month (assumption, chosen because 3,700 ÷ 370 ≈ 10 meetings); unanswered dials bill 0.5 minutes and connected calls 3 minutes (assumption); build fee amortised over 12 months (assumption); phone data for the AI agent $100–$300 a month (assumption); human review of transcripts and transfers excluded from both columns. On those assumptions the agent's 3,700 calls bill about 2,800 minutes (3,334 × 0.5 plus 366 × 3), or $168–$420 of usage at $0.06–$0.15 a minute.
| Option | Monthly cost | Dials a month | Meetings (Belkins funnel) | Cost per booked meeting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One in-house SDR, Gurgaon, 60 dials a day | ≈ ₹1.51 lakh (≈ $1,780) | 1,260 | ≈ 3.4 | ≈ ₹44,000 (≈ $520) |
| Same SDR at 100 dials a day (assumption) | ≈ ₹1.51 lakh | 2,100 | ≈ 5.7 | ≈ ₹26,500 (≈ $310) |
| One in-house SDR, US, base salary only | ≈ $4,300 | 1,260 | ≈ 3.4 | ≈ $1,265 before taxes, benefits, tools and a manager |
| AI calling agent, Starter build ($599 ÷ 12) plus usage, numbers and data | ≈ $320–$770 | 3,700 | ≈ 10 | ≈ $32–$77 (≈ ₹2,700–₹6,500) |
| AI calling agent, Enterprise build ($6,000 ÷ 12) plus usage, numbers and data | ≈ $770–$1,220 | 3,700 | ≈ 10 | ≈ $77–$122 (≈ ₹6,500–₹10,400) |
The gap is driven by volume, not the per-minute price: an agent is not limited to one person's day, and Retell and Bolna publish 20 to 25 concurrent calls on entry plans. At 300 calls a month instead of 3,700 the AI column stops being cheap, and the human column has the upside we cannot model: a rep who beats Belkins' 4.6% conversation-to-meeting rate changes the result more than any dialer discount. In a real quote we would add to both columns a person to review transcripts and take transfers, the CRM and calendar integration, and GST on INR invoices.
When a human SDR wins
- Genuinely cold outbound in India. Promotional calls to non-consented numbers must run on the 140 series after DLT registration and DND scrubbing, and we do not build cold robocalls. If the plan is to dial strangers, hire a person.
- Cold outbound in the US. The FCC's 8 February 2024 ruling classes AI-generated voices as "artificial" under the TCPA, so an AI call needs the prior consent a prerecorded one does. A human caller is not under that rule.
- Complex enterprise deals, where the first call is a 30-minute diagnostic and the value is judgment, not dial volume.
- Markets where buyers hang up on anything automated, and every agent we build announces that it is.
- Fewer than a few hundred calls a month, where the build fee and review time outweigh the usage saving.
When the AI calling agent wins
Consented follow-up at volume (calling back form fills within minutes, confirming demos, reactivating past customers, renewal reminders), inbound lines where the cost is missed calls rather than dials made, Hindi and English on one number, and picking up the replies from an AI SDR email campaign that asked for a call.
Compliance note: the 140 series, consent and disclosure
In India, TRAI's TCCCPR rules put promotional calls on the 140 number series with DLT registration and DND scrubbing, reserve the 1600 series for service calls by regulated entities, and the DPDP Act 2023 covers recordings and personal data. In the US, the TCPA requires prior consent for artificial-voice calls, and the FCC has said AI voices count. Every agent we build announces that it is automated, discloses recording where kept, calls only consented or existing-relationship numbers on outbound flows, and transfers to a person. Rules change (TRAI amended the TCCCPR in 2025); confirm the current text with counsel. See our compliance notes.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an AI calling agent cost in India in 2026?
Digital Patron's published build fees run from $599 to $6,000+, one-time and in USD, invoiced in INR with GST for Indian clients. Usage is billed by the providers: Bolna publishes $0.06 a minute (₹5.52), Retell $0.07–$0.31, and Vapi about $0.08–$0.13 all-in at its calculator defaults.
How much does a human SDR cost in India?
About ₹1.05 lakh a month in salary and benefits for a Gurgaon SDR (₹8.5 lakh a year plus 25%), per our outsourced SDR page; PayScale India's average base is ₹7,30,080 a year. With a dialer, data and manager time on the assumptions above, roughly ₹1.5 lakh.
What is a realistic cost per booked meeting from calling?
On Belkins' benchmark of one meeting per 370 dials and our assumptions, roughly ₹26,500–₹44,000 ($310–$520) for an in-house Gurgaon SDR and $32–$122 for an AI agent on a consented list at 3,700 calls a month. Your list, offer and dial volume move every one of those numbers.
Can an AI calling agent cold call in India?
Not the way a person can. Promotional calls need DLT registration, DND scrubbing and the 140 series, and we do not build cold robocall campaigns. Our outbound flows call people who gave consent or have an existing relationship with you.
Which platform is cheapest per minute: Vapi, Retell or Bolna?
Bolna's $0.06 headline is lowest but excludes telephony; Retell's estimator default is $0.11; Vapi works out to about $0.08–$0.13 with Twilio. The model you choose moves the LLM line from under a cent to over $0.30 a minute on Retell's list, so the stack matters more than the platform fee.
Do you have voice agent case studies?
Not yet. Voice is the newest line in our AI agent work; our published agent case studies are text and workflow agents. Read those as proof of how we build, not as voice results.
